Fall 2003 Grant Awards
The Castro Valley Educational Foundation is pleased to announce this fall’s grant awards. Ten projects are being funded for a total of $5,192. The Foundation’s board of directors thanks the community for its financial support of our schools. We also extend our gratitude to the teachers, principals, and other school district staff who work so hard to provide quality education to the youth of Castro Valley.
Grants have been awarded to:
Canyon Middle School, $158
Wall classroom mural of the world
The wall mural will provide a visual tool to help connect geographic locales to the study of history.
Canyon Middle School, $500
Math and reading curriculum materials for special education
The materials will enable special education students to receive a quality, standards-based education by allowing in-depth learning at a slower pace.
Castro Valley High School, $250
College and career books for Career Center
Books that contain college information, scholarships and career opportunities will be used by students, faculty, and parents. Books that have a “long shelf life” will be encouraged with this grant.
Castro Valley High School, $1415
Ceiling mounted video projector for science classes
Computer technology is necessary for implementation of the new biotechnology program, which will begin in the fall of 2004. The use of a video projector linked to a computer allows the teacher to guide all students through the click-by-click process by which complex computer tasks can be accomplished. This technology extends to current Chemistry classes as well, where research projects, lab data analyses, and online activities are heavily used.
Creekside Middle School, $1,000
Materials for ceramic mural
The mural will be made by the students out of ceramic clay tiles depicting a design focusing on the history and meaning of the school. The entire mural will be designed by the students, drawn out, transferred on to the tiles, painted with ceramic glazes, and installed by the students. A parent, who is a local ceramics artist and teacher, will supervise the project.
Independent Elementary School, $500
Materials for Creative Writing and Movement workshop
The workshop, for 5th graders, will focus on developing trust and skill in using ideas and combining different forms of creative expressions such as creative writing, poetry, dramatic expression, and movement.
Independent Elementary School, $250
SCRABBLE program for 3rd-5th grade
The SCRABBLE game can help improve a wide range of skills including: vocabulary, spelling, dictionary skills, math skills, critical thinking skills, cooperative learning, conflict resolution, and creative problem solving.
Jensen Ranch Elementary School, $569
Guided readers for kindergarten
This year the kindergarten teachers are going to pilot a kindergarten version of Readers’ Workshop to help improve reading comprehension skills of all learners. During Readers’ Workshop, children will work at their own pace with teacher assistance and independently on reading, writing, and comprehension activities at their appropriate learning levels. Materials at guided reading levels will compliment the established classroom libraries and allow for opportunities to practice at independent work levels.
Jensen Ranch Elementary School, $250
Chess boards and materials for chess club
The grant will be used to purchase chess boards, pieces, and teacher chess sets for beginners. The goals for the chess after school club are to improve strategy abilities, teach and learn from others, improve chess skills, and improve English for some students.
Castro Valley Unified School District, Special Services, $300
Art teaching and therapy supplies
Art supplies will be utilized so that the students can explore their feeling both verbally and non-verbally through artistic means. Art therapy engages the students physically and emotionally and allows the students to learn about themselves through the artistic experience.
