Grant Program Criteria

The Castro Valley Educational Foundation awards grants to teachers, students, parents, CVUSD employees, and others for programs or projects that are especially effective in promoting excellence in the education of students in the Castro Valley public schools.

Grants are awarded once each year, up to a maximum of $1,500.00 per grant. Applicants must complete a Grant Application Form, which must be received at the proper address by the cutoff date. Incomplete applications and those with insufficient information will be rejected. An applicant may submit only one application per grant cycle. (This limit does not apply to collaborations of applicants who plan to share a program or project.)

Applications will be evaluated by a Grant Evaluation Committee comprising CVEF members who are parents, educators, members of the business community, and members of the community at large. The committee will make recommendations for funding to the CVEF Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will make all selection decisions.

In general, we favor grant applications for projects that:

  • Are creative
  • Are complete and well-researched
  • Clearly and specifically state what the grant will be used for
  • Present a clear budget with specific line items for proposed purchases
  • Serve a large number of students (especially if the grant request is large)
  • Are related to the teaching/learning process
  • Are challenging for the students
  • Are age appropriate
  • Identify contributions from other sources, matching grants, or school fundraising
  • Support purchases that will endure over time
  • Clearly identify goals and criteria for evaluation of project

WE WILL NOT FUND:

  • Salaries or stipends
  • Retroactive expenses or activities
  • Debt retirement or fund balance deficits
  • Incomplete applications
  • Student snacks
  • Office supplies, office furniture or office equipment
  • Clothing, e.g., t-shirts or sweatshirts
  • Teacher training or professional growth activities
  • Applications with incomplete budgets or budgets that do not match the described program
  • Trophies, pins, certificates of achievement, etc.
  • Projects that do not describe or provide a clear educational benefit to Castro Valley students

The Grant Evaluation Committee will recommend to the Board of Directors that those applications which most closely meet the goals of the Foundation be fully or partially funded.

The Foundation will not fund the same project more than once. The Foundation endeavors to provide funding parity between schools.

A post-funding evaluation will be required for every grant awarded. Failure to submit a post-funding evaluation will result in the applicant’s school’s disqualification from the next grant cycle and may result in a demand by CVEF for return of all funds awarded.

Grant Process:

Applications must be properly completed and sent to the correct address.

After the cut-off date, the CVEF grant committee begins evaluation, and no additional submissions can be considered.

Evaluation of all grants is usually completed  six weeks after the cutoff date.

All applicants are notified of the decision concerning their grant as promptly as possible.

Grants are presented at a Castro Valley Unified School District meeting in April.
