Winter/Spring 2004 Grant Awards

The Castro Valley Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the winter/spring 2004 grant awards. 14 projects are being funded for a total of $7,497. The Foundation's board of directors thanks the community for its financial support of our schools. We also extend our gratitude to the teachers, principals, and other school district staff who work so hard to provide quality education to the youth of Castro Valley.

Grants have been awarded to:

Canyon Middle School, $702
Composting system for school garden

The double rotating composter bin will be used in the school garden, which is utilized by teachers to enhance the science curriculum, including ecosystem study.

Canyon Middle School, $44
Music activity kit and curriculum

Music appreciation class will be enhanced by using lessons and background material that will accompany pieces of music that the teacher currently owns.

Canyon Middle School, $273
Watercolor pencils for art class

Students will use a new type of art medium and will be better able to work with mixing colors, learning the color wheel, and replicating the works of watercolor artists such as Georgia O'Keefe.

Canyon Middle School, $518
Early civilization roller mounted maps for social studies

Maps that show the world as it appeared in ancient times and how geography affected where civilizations developed will enhance early civilization curriculum.

Specialized algebra textbooks that are specifically created for lower performing students will help to prepare Special Education students for the high school exit exam, which requires a working knowledge of algebra.

Castro Valley High School, $236
Remedial reading textbooks for Special Education

Remedial reading textbooks will teach students with reading difficulties strategies to decode multisyllabic words.
