Winter/Spring 2004 Grant Awards
The Castro Valley Educational Foundation is pleased to announce the
winter/spring 2004 grant awards. 14 projects are being funded for a
total of $7,497. The Foundation's board of directors thanks the
community for its financial support of our schools. We also extend our
gratitude to the teachers, principals, and other school district staff
who work so hard to provide quality education to the youth of Castro
Valley.
Grants have been awarded to:
Canyon Middle School, $702
Composting system for school garden
The double rotating composter bin will be used in the school garden,
which is utilized by teachers to enhance the science curriculum,
including ecosystem study.
Canyon Middle School, $44
Music activity kit and curriculum
Music appreciation class will be enhanced by using lessons and
background material that will accompany pieces of music that the
teacher currently owns.
Canyon Middle School, $273
Watercolor pencils for art class
Students will use a new type of art medium and will be better able to
work with mixing colors, learning the color wheel, and replicating the
works of watercolor artists such as Georgia O'Keefe.
Canyon Middle School, $518
Early civilization roller mounted maps for social studies
Maps that show the world as it appeared in ancient times and how
geography affected where civilizations developed will enhance early
civilization curriculum.
Castro Valley Elementary School, $750
Braille and large print "Just Right" books
Braille and large print books are very expensive, ranging from $100 to
$1000 for a single copy. Increasing the number of available books will
encourage visually challenged students to read more.
Castro Valley High School, $500
Rewritable DVD recorder for video production classes
The recorder will be used to archive student video projects and to
create permanent DVD masters from existing VHS sources that are used
as teaching tools.
Castro Valley High School, $500
Math textbooks, parent guides, and teacher materials for Special
Education
Specialized algebra textbooks that are specifically created for lower
performing students will help to prepare Special Education students
for the high school exit exam, which requires a working knowledge of
algebra.
Castro Valley High School, $236
Remedial reading textbooks for Special Education
Remedial reading textbooks will teach students with reading
difficulties strategies to decode multisyllabic words.
